This is a study for the life-size statue of Prime Minister Clement Attlee, commissioned for the Members' Lobby of the House of Commons. Attlee first joined the Independent Labour Party in 1908 before serving overseas in the First World War. He became an MP in 1922, and eventually Labour leader in 1935. Attlee served in Churchill's war coalition as Lord Privy Seal, Deputy Prime Minister, and Secretary of State for the Dominions.
In 1945 Attlee's Labour Party came to power. His government is remembered for its socio-economic policies, significantly the establishment of the National Health Service. Attlee also witnessed the formation of NATO and Indian national independence. After his defeat in 1951, he remained leader until 1955, when he was made an earl and entered the House of Lords.
