Fragmenting the reflections of its surroundings, 'West Split' is composed of over 100 mirrors mounted on wood. As sunlight falls and bounces on the sculpture it shimmers and inhabits a space of its own. Mirrored walls and shining surfaces are increasingly common features of modern office, retail and domestic spaces. Gary Webb alludes to these elements of everyday spaces in a playful and light-hearted fashion. Mirrors reflect the movement of people around them, and are to many, irresistible objects of delight.
Gary Webb was born in Bascombe, Dorset and studied fine art at Goldsmiths College of Art, London (1994 -97). He has exhibited in group shows around the world and has had solo exhibitions of his work in London, Salzburg and New York. In 2005 he was one of six artists commissioned by the Government Art Collection, on behalf of the Home Office, to make public art for the new Home Office building in central London. Webb lives and works in London.
