  • About the artist
Jeremy Deller was born in London. He studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art before completing an MA at the University of Sussex. Solo projects include 'After The Goldrush', a guidebook and treasure hunt around California, commissioned by the Wattis Institute, San Francisco (2002); and 'This is US', a CD produced with the Centre for Curatorial Studies (2003). 'Folk Archive', a collaborative project with Alan Kane, was exhibited in Tate Britain’s touring exhibition 'Intelligence. Folk Archive: Contemporary Popular Art From The UK' (2000). Deller won the Turner Prize in 2007; and in 2013, represented Britain at the Venice Biennale with 'English Magic', a show that toured the UK in 2014. Other projects include '24-Hour-Rockshow' at the Old Student House, Helsinki (2015); and 'Iggy Pop Life Class', a drawing class with the acclaimed American rock artist as model at the New York Academy of Art in early 2016, the results of which were exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum that autumn.
Central questions in Alan Kane’s practice, have always revolved around what constitutes a work of art, and what role does the artist play in its production. In the early 1990s Alan Kane abandoned painting to explore Fluxus and Situationist strategies for making art. This resulted in a series of one-off events and walking tours for a variety of spaces, including Stringfellows nightclub and the New Art Gallery, Walsall. In these projects Kane played with the idea of the artist as a producer and author of objects. If Alan Kane was to make tangible art works during this period, then these were generally snapped photographs of friends, nights out, and oddities that caught his eye. These images had a throwaway quality to them and were presented casually, almost to deny them any weight.
