This map is taken from the atlas volume of ‘Histoire physique, morale, civile et politique de la Russie Ancienne’ (published 1783-94) by Nicholas-Gabriel Le Clerc (1726-1798). ‘Histoire physique…’ also includes impressive panoramic views of towns and palaces after original designs by French painter and draftsman Louis-Nicolas de Lespinasse (1734-1808).

About the artist
Pierre François Tardieu was a French cartographer and engraver. Remarkably there were three other unrelated French map and print engravers who worked in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, also named Tardieu, and their work is frequently confused.
