This map of Russia also includes all of Scandinavia and the Black and Caspian Seas. At the top left hand corner is a bird's-eye view map of the city of Moscow, apparently based on a version in ‘Civitates Orbis Terrarum’ (see GAC 18240).

This map is derived from engraver, cartographer and publisher Hessel Gerritsz' rare and significant map of Russia, which he compiled from manuscripts brought back by the Dutch grain trader, traveller and diplomat Isaac Massa (1586-1643). The map is richly decorated and includes a large title cartouche. It was first published in 1613 and, in the following year, an edited version was published with additions and corrections. The map continued to be re-issued by the Blaeu publishing and printing firm until 1665.
