This delicate, black and white print of New York by Ewan Gibbs presents a familiar view of the city. The imagery, however, is hazy, almost as if you are looking at it through a screen. Move back from the work and the image becomes clearer; the lights shine brighter and the outlines of buildings are more sharply defined. Gibbs begins making his architectural prints by taking photographs of landmarks in cities. He then painstakingly translates these into drawings by applying tiny, hand drawn, pixel-like marks to a grid.

Ewan Gibbs graduated from Goldsmiths College, London, in 1996. He lives in Oxfordshire in the UK. He was chosen to represent the Armory Show in New York in 2009 and will be exhibiting drawings at MoMA in San Francisco in 2010. Public collections that hold his work include Tate, London; MoMA, New York, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas.
