This 19th century bird’s eye view of London was commissioned as a 12-page supplement for the Illustrated London News. It was published by William Little and it shows Vauxhall in the west, continuing through central London and across Greenwich in the East. The print consists of three sheets joint together. Westminster Abbey appears in the left foreground and other recognisable sites including Somerset House, the Tower of London and Christopher Wren’s Old Royal Naval College can also be spotted as one follows the winding path of the River Thames. This 19th century print also shows the busy traffic on the River as well as the developments that have taken place in London during that period. One of these was the railway and a train with seven carriages can be seen in the distance towards the Greenwich area. Equally busy are the bridges of London, with horse-drawn carriages and people dressed in Victorian clothes.
