In Untitled (2016) a painting by Victoria Morton, a composition of overlapping pools and delicate veils in watery blends of reds, mauves and pinks create a shallow recessive space that seems to dilate and collapse before our eyes. The image rests on the threshold of being figurative, yet remains abstract. Small blobs of bright colour disrupt the space, preventing an easy or sentimental reading of the image.
Morton approaches her work as a process of constructing a ‘narrative of sensations’ in which personal and historical references collide. Filling the canvas with layers of colour and interlocking form, she creates expansive spaces that have the power to envelop and overwhelm. This equates with her interest in the non-verbal expression of music – that like listening to a piece of music, a visual experience can also create a psychological or physical response.
Morton’s paintings appear spontaneous or improvised, but stem from her experience and understanding of art and music. Until 2014, she was a member of the all-female, Glaswegian experimental art-rock band, Muscles of Joy.
