Psychotropic 9

Diane Howse (09/11/1956 - )

oil and oil crayon on canvas

2019
  • About the work
In this oil painting, Howse layers gestural brushstrokes of grey, yellow, green and red that jostle against each other on a white canvas. Howse does not draw from existent images or environments, but rather allows materials and techniques to dictate her paintings. While the artist works in an abstract tradition, Howse encourages viewers to bring their own set of associations to the image. The painting’s title – psychotropic, as in acting on the mind – suggests this unique encounter between person and artwork. For some, Howse’s Psychotropic 9 may call to mind mountain peaks, clouds and treetops, a contemporary take on the sublime.
