Andrew Pierre Hart explores the symbiotic relationship between sound and painting. His work draws on his ongoing rhythmic research, and on the play between improvised and spontaneous relations and associations; which are termed ‘generative processes’. In this painting, the artist painted rich velvety hues of indigo and purple as he listened to music at a ‘healing’ frequency of between 60-80 Hz. West African architecture and musical forms; as well as fractal geometric patterns inform his abstract vocabulary, while the figure references the American NASA scientist and inventor of the illusion transmitter Valerie Thomas. The celebration of Black excellence is an ongoing theme in his work and his work is influenced by the writings of American literary and musical figures including Fred Moten, Alvin Toffler and Saul Williams. The plasticity and dexterity of rap, poetry and spoken word is a key reference for Hart. He uses, in his paintings, an artistic process akin to the bricolage-like character of the current digital technologies used by music DJ’s. These ‘DJ technologies’ are aimed at affecting a flexion and torsion of language and sound, which Hart applies to painting and space.
