  • About the work
In this richly textured untitled painting by Simon Ling, we look at a gathering of small logs, perhaps cut from a fallen tree and left together in what appears to be a lush green landscape. The logs are painted in a way that makes them look almost animated, drawing our attention actively towards them, as if they were in conversation with us. Ling is interested in how we look at the environment we find ourselves in; in what we perceive when we look; and how we relate to what we see. His work points to a deep connection with the world around us. Ling works with paint to investigate how the creative mind perceives everyday scenes, inviting us to ask questions about the very experience of perception, and where it sits in relation to reality and the human mind.
