Sean Edwards’ autobiographical work draws on his experiences of growing up working class during the 1980s. Spliced and scanned images show fragments of photographs of the artist as a child, portraits of family members including his estranged father, whose handwritten betting slips appear alongside extracts of his Personal Independence Payment assessment. There are images of the steel town in the Welsh Valleys where his father grew up and the patterns of a 1980s Manchester United football shirt – a gift given to the artist by his father.
In this rhythmic and looping composition of images which speak of loss, displacement and precarity Edwards positions his working class experience as fragmented and complex. This work reflects on the persistence of the past and the intertwined relationship between class, politics and place.
