Sunshine bicho vi (at midnight) is part of a series of seven different bronze faces created by Theodore Ereira-Guyer over the course of 2024 for his solo exhibition, Sleeping Lions, held at Elizabeth Xi Bauer Gallery. He poured plaster onto the studio floor; sculpting with the movement of gravity while pouring, and shaping with his own hands. A mould was then created of the sculpture and then, using the lost wax method, rendered into bronze. Ereira-Guyer is interested in the archetypal categories of western art history; landscape, portrait and still life. These bronze, aluminium and plaster faces have allowed him to make work within the framework of portraiture without having to focus on any sense of personhood. He conceived this series of works as phantoms and spectres, hoping to achieve a timeless quality and presence, as some kind of haunting. A floating identity-less being, some form of human presence that stood for both collective and personal histories and memories.
