    The artist of this expertly executed portrait of Sir Austen Henry Layard is yet to be identified. A similar portrait of Layard by Ludwig Johann Passani (1832-1903), dated 1891, is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Layard appears to be slightly younger in this work than in Passani’s version and he was probably in his early seventies when he sat for the painting.
