'Crouch Hall (Grounds)' shows Highgate village in the background, viewed form the house. An artificial waterfall is seen in the grounds, behind the bridge to the left of the composition. This is one of a pair of paintings, commissioned to mark the completion of the building of Crouch Hall and the laying-out of its estate.

Sporting painter and engraver (Charles) Dean Wolstenholme the younger was born near Waltham Abbey, Essex; the son of animal painter Dean Wolstenholme (1757-1837). He was initially taught to paint by his father. He made engravings after works by himself, his father and others, and invented a colour printing process patented by Leighton Bros. He painted hunting and shooting scenes, historical subjects and views of well-known London brewery yards, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Society of British Artists. He was also a pigeon fancier and illustrated J. M. Eaton's ‘Treatise on the Art of Breeding and Managing Tame, Domesticated and Fancy Pigeons’ (1852). He died at Highgate, Middlesex, just before his 85th birthday.
