About the artist
Keith Vaughan was born in Sussex in 1912. He was a self-taught artist whose first solo exhibition was in London in 1944. In the same decade he travelled to North Africa, Mexico and the USA, where he was resident artist at Iowa State University in 1959. He taught art at the Slade School of Art between 1959 and 1977 and was awarded a CBE in 1965. He had a retrospective at the Whitechapel Gallery, London in 1962 and represented Britain at the Sao Paolo Biennale a year later. Vaughan was diagnosed with cancer in 1975 and died by suicide in 1977. His reputation has continued to grow since his untimely death.
