A fishing boat battles through rough seas, towards a coastal town, as the fishermen aboard struggle to gather up a net. In the foreground a buoy, marked by a red flag, is thrown around by the choppy water.
This is a subject that artist James Meadows senior painted frequently. His view of 'Fishing off the Coast in Rough Waters' was sold through Bonhams, San Francisco, in 2006; 'Hauling in the Nets', was sold through Bonhams, London, in 2007; and 'A Breezy Day off the Low Countries' was sold through Christie’s, South Kensington, in 2008. The town seen in the background of this work does not resemble a British coastal town and may represent a location in the Low Countries.
