About the artist
Little is known about James Godsell Middleton, a portrait and genre (including historical genre) painter, who exhibited numerous paintings at the Royal Academy from 1827 to 1872. He also exhibited at The Royal Society of British Artists from 1826 to 1864. Middleton lived in Walworth, South London, before moving to addresses at Newman Street, Ovington Square and Gloucester Place, all in central London. Intriguingly, the Pitti Palace in Florence (the former residence of grand-dukes of Tuscany and the King of Italy; now a museum and art gallery), has a self-portrait by the artist.
