This print shows a birds-eye view of Chelsea Hospital and the surrounding estate. On 22nd December 1681, King Charles II issued a Royal Warrant authorising the building of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. Sir Christopher Wren, the King's Surveyor-General of Works, was commissioned to design and erect the building, while Sir Stephen Fox (1627–1716), Paymaster General to the Army (1661–79) and a Commissioner of the Treasury, was employed to secure the funds. Fox obtained the finance through numerous means, including campaigning for private donations to the project.
