Frenchman Philippe-Victor Touchard was a lieutenant aboard ‘The Bonite’, commanded by Captain Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant, which left Toulon, in southern France, on 6 February 1836. The purpose of the voyage was to circumnavigate the globe, taking consular agents to various remote posts. However, the crew also made many valuable scientific observations.
The painter and lithographer Jean Victor Adam was born in Paris in 1801 and died at Viroflay, in north-central France, in 1867. He was the son of engraver Jean Adam, from whom he received his first drawing lessons. Adam became known for his large-scale battle scenes.
