  • About the artist
Painter, printmaker, illustrator and poet, Rudolf Helmut Sauter was born in 1895, the son of the Bavarian portrait painter, Professor George Sauter and Lilian Galsworthy, daughter of the writer, John Galsworthy. Rudolph studied in London and, like his father, in Munich. With strong literary interests, he joined PEN, the writers’ club and illustrated the definitive version of works by John Galsworthy. He exhibited his work widely in Britain, including the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy, as well as in Paris and New York. Many of Sauter’s works are in private collections in South Africa, the United States, Italy and Morocco. He died at home in Stroud, Gloucestershire in 1977.
