Since the early 1960s, Robyn Denny has made paintings and prints that use colour and form in a controlled and resolutely abstract way. Often produced in series, each work contains subtle and often minute variations to explore space and the perceptual expectations of the viewer.
Outline 6 combines vertical rectangular shapes and lines with a range of complementary colour tones. His work has been described as having a lightness and coolness of approach that belies the intricate planning which goes into each piece. The work presents a system of signs and geometric symbols which are designed to challenge the viewer, while resisting easy interpretation. Denny himself offers few clues, remarking in 2002:
I don't like talking about my work in an interpretative way. I never describe and I never explain.
