About the artist
Joshua Ross junior, an artist from a family of landscape and decorative painters from Bury St Edmunds, was the son of Joshua Ross, an artist who had been apprenticed to Robert Robinson and freed in 1691. It has been suggested that Joshua Ross Junior is also a relative of Thomas Ross [Rosse] (active 1730-c.1757) of Bury St Edmunds. The painter James Ross may be another relative.
