John Carter was born in Middlesex in 1942. He studied at the Twickenham School of Art from 1958 and then at Kingston School of Art until 1963. Chosen as one of the Whitechapel Gallery’s ‘New Generation’ artists, a Leverhulme Travelling Scholarship took him to Italy, where he made his first abstract construction at the British School at Rome. On returning to the UK, Carter worked as an assistant to the sculptor Bryan Kneale. Carter had his first solo exhibition at Redfern Gallery, London in 1968. After winning two Arts Council Awards, a retrospective exhibition of Carter’s work was held at the Warwick Arts Trust, London in 1983. While taking part in shows in Germany, Carter had his first contact with other European concrete and constructive artists. He has since exhibited widely in Europe, Japan and the USA. Carter held a teaching position at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, retiring in 1999. In 2010 Carter had a retrospective at the Redfern Gallery in London. In 2012 he had a solo exhibition at Galerie Wack, Kaiserslautern, Germany and Sideways and Down, his 1966 sculpture, was shown alongside other of his works at Southampton City Art Gallery.
