About the artist
John F. Tennant was born in London and worked in a merchant’s office before launching his career as an artist. He was mostly self-taught but also studied for a short time under Scottish marine painter William Anderson. His early works include landscapes and historical genre subjects, but he is best known for river and coastal scenes. Tennant exhibited at the Society of British Artists, the Royal Academy, British Institution and New Watercolour Society. His paintings include views of Yorkshire, Dovedale in Derbyshire, Northern France and the Channel Islands. He changed address regularly throughout his career, living consecutively in London, Kent, Wales, Surrey and North Devon, before returning to London for the final two years of his life.
