This 19th-century architectural print captures a picturesque view of St Margaret’s Church and Westminster Abbey. Elegant passersby are strolling down the street, while carriages and men on horseback can be seen on the road nearby. A young boy, having swept the street, asks for recompense.

Westminster Abbey, one of the most impressive architectural features of London, was founded in 616, although much of the current building was constructed between 1245 and 1517. The Abbey’s most recognisable features – the western towers, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor – were built between 1722 and 1745.

St Margaret’s Church, with its stone façade dating from the 18th century, was erected in the Roman style in the 11th century. In the 14th century, during the reign of Edward III, the nave was replaced with a new one built in the Perpendicular style.
