Dressed in red, with a white neck tie and long powdered wig, the sitter of this portrait may be Charles Churchill (1656-1714), brother of John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722). Although the pose of the sitter relates to a portrait of the first Duke by Dutch painter and draftsman Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722) in the Uffizzi Gallery, Florence, the man depicted bears more of a resemblance to Charles, than his brother. This work was previously titled simply ‘A Duke of Marlborough’.
