  • About the artist
Watercolourist Samuel Phillips Jackson was born in Bristol; the son of watercolour painter Samuel Jackson (1794-1869). He trained under his father and attended life classes at the Bristol Fine Arts Academy. Jackson exhibited in London at the British Institution, the Royal Academy and the Old Watercolour Society, of which he became the youngest ever member, aged 22. He exhibited some 841 watercolours at the society's exhibitions. In 1858 Jackson visited Switzerland with his father. He never married and his closest companions remained his dogs. When he died in Clifton, Bristol, at the age of 73, he left bequests to two canine charities.
