This portrait was presented by the Emperor to diplomat Sir Horace Rumbold on his retirement from the British Embassy in Vienna in September 1900 (having served in Austria since 1897). The portrait was loaned to the Embassy in 1969 by Sir Anthony Rumbold, grandson of Sir Horace and the then British Ambassador to Austria (1967-70). It was purchased for the Government Art Collection from Sir Anthony’s widow, Lady Pauline Rumbold, in 1984.
