A man kneels on country road, reaching for his hat on the ground, perhaps having trapped a small animal beneath it. His two companions, seated by his side, watch with interest. Behind them are the picturesque ruins of Netley Abbey in Hampshire.

Netley Abbey was also painted by John Constable (1776-1837), Samuel Prout (1783-1852) and Francis Towne (1739-1816).

Nothing is known of the artist J. Penton and it does not appear that he or she ever exhibited works in the UK. It seems likely that Penton is therefore an amateur artist. Watercolour landscape painting was a popular leisure pursuit for member of the aristocracy and middle class during the 18th and 19th centuries.
