About the artist
Little is known of the life of the painter James Ross, who is sometimes known as James Ross I to distinguish him from an engraver and draftsman named James Ross (1745-1821). It has been suggested that Ross was a relative of the decorative and topographical painter Thomas Ross (active 1730-1757), an associate of the sibling engravers and topographical artists Samuel and Nathaniel Buck.
