French artist Gérard de la Barthe, a topographical painter and etcher, was active in St Petersburg and Moscow between 1787 and 1810. He studied under French painter, engraver and draftsman Jospeh-Marie Vien the elder (1716-1809). From 1794 to 1798 Barthe produced a series of twelve views of Moscow. These were engraved by F. B. Lorieux and published by Jean [Johann] Walser in 1799. Other prints in the series include ‘The Baths of Cerebrensky, near Moscow’; ‘View of Podnovisky Square in Moscow’; and ‘View of the Mountains of Ice during Carnival at Moscow’.
