Richard Bawden, printmaker and designer, was born in Braintree, Essex, the son of Edward Bawden (1903-89) the celebrated painter and illustrator. Richard studied at Chelsea, St Martin’s and Winchester Schools of Art, before going to the Royal College of Art, London in 1958- 62. A versatile artist, Bawden has designed restaurant murals, swimming pool mosaics, furniture, textile and poster designs, including poster commissions for London Underground. He has exhibited in solo and mixed exhibitions throughout the UK and abroad, and regularly submits work to the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. Bawden is a member of several distinguished organisations including the Royal Society of Printmakers, the Society of Designer- Craftsmen and an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society. In 1996 his 60th birthday was marked by major exhibitions of his work at Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury, and the John Russell Gallery in Ipswich, Suffolk.
