George Howland Beaumont was brought up in Suffolk where he met landscape artists Thomas Hearne and Joseph Farington. Both Hearne and Farington had a considerable influence upon him and joined him on his honeymoon in the Lake District in 1778. Beaumont established a well merited reputation as an art patron, befriending Constable, Wordsworth, Coleridge and Scott amongst others. His house in Grosvenor Square became a focal point for people from the worlds of art and politics. Beaumont was one of the principal founders and benefactors of the National Gallery. His drawings have a romantic, 18th-century manner and show the influence of Claude and Wilson.
