Charles Blomfield, a self-taught New Zealand artist, established his reputation by producing views of the Pink and White Terraces at Rotomahana, North Island, New Zealand. These terraces were destroyed by the eruption of the Terawera volcano in October 1886 and in response clients nostalgically demanded replicas of his terrace paintings. Examples of Blomfield's work were shown in the exhibition ‘Two Centuries of New Zealand Landscape Art’, held at Auckland City Art Gallery in 1990.
