Richard Hicks Bridgens was an architect, designer, draughtsman and lithographer. He studied under sculptor and cabinet-maker George Bullock and lived with Bullock in Liverpool. He exhibited at the Liverpool Academy (1810-12) and Royal Academy (1813-26). He also authored ‘The Antiquities of Sefton Church’ (1822). He briefly lived in Birmingham and designed furniture for James Watt of Aston Hall. He published ‘West India Scenery’ in 1836 and his designs for ‘Furniture with Candelabra and Interior Decoration’ in 1838. By 1844 he had relocated to Trinidad, where he worked as Superintendent of Public Works. He is last recorded sending his designs for a monument to Sir Ralph Woodford for the Anglican Cathedral, Trinidad, to Sir Francis Chantrey.
