Alexandre Cabanel was born in Montpellier, in southern France. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from the age of 16. In 1863 he was elected a member and was also appointed a professor there. His students included British painter Solomon Joseph Solomon (1860-1927). Cabanel’s best known work is ‘The Birth of Venus’ (1863; Musée d'Orsay, Paris). He died in Paris at the age of 65.
