(1865 - 1936)
George V was the second son of Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark, famous for her upright character and beauty. George married Mary of Teck, his late elder brother’s fiancée. He was the cousin of Czar Nicholas II, to whom he bore a striking physical resemblance. George V’s reign was unsettled by a series of crises, including Home Rule for Ireland, the First World War, the General Strike and the Depression. In addition, the important development of the Commonwealth of Nations occurred during his reign and he was conscious of addressing the entire Commonwealth when he made the first of the traditional broadcasts by the monarch on Christmas Day in 1932.
