Bonaventura Peeters was born in Antwerp in 1614 and became a master of the city’s Guild of St. Luke (the painters’ guild) in 1634. Little is known about his training, but he came from a family of marine and landscape painters. He shared a studio in Antwerp with his brother Gillis, with whom he collaborated. He later lived in Hoboken and worked with his sister Catharina and brother Jan Peeters I. The naturalism of his paintings of northern European landscapes has led some to believe that he travelled around Scandinavia, but his paintings of southern European seascapes are generally held to be imaginative rather than observational.
