James Doyle Penrose, portrait painter, was born at Michelstown, County Dublin. He studied at the South Kensington Schools, St. John's Wood and the Royal Academy Schools in London. He exhibited from 1889 at the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery. His principal works include ‘The Presence in the Midst’, ‘Last Chapter’ and ‘Queen Philippa interceding for the Burghers of Calais’. He lived near Watford and married Elizabeth Josephine (died 1930), daughter of Alexander Peckover, later Baron Peckover and Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire. The couple had four sons, including physician Lionel Sharples Penrose (1898-1972) and artist, writer, and exhibition organizer Sir Roland Algernon Penrose (1900-1984).
