Born in Tynemouth, Northumberland, Ernest Procter studied in Newlyn, then at Atelier Colarossi (Paris, 1910–11). In 1912 he met and married artist, Dod Procter, with whom he exhibited at the Fine Art Society (1913). He served in the First World War, but in 1916 he exhibited with the International Society. In the 1920s, the Procters collaborated on projects and exhibited together in London, Manchester and Northampton. Ernest became a member of the New English Art Club (1929) and Associate of the Royal Academy (1932). He was Head of Design/Craft at Glasgow School of Art (1934). His last joint show with his wife was in London in 1935, before his death that October. Memorial exhibitions were held in London and Newcastle in 1936.
