William Roberts studied part-time at St Martin's School of Art until 1910 when he won a scholarship to the Slade School of Art. In 1914, he joined the Vorticists, a leading avant-garde group in Britain. After the Second World War he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, becoming an RA in 1968. A major show of his work was held at the Tate Gallery in 1965.
