Prolific sporting painter John Nost Sartorius was born in London, the son of painter Francis Sartorius senior. His second name may derive from sculptor John van Nost, a neighbour in Piccadilly. Sartorius later moved to Soho with his father, then to St Martin-in-the-Fields, before settling in Kennington towards the end of his life. His early work strongly resembles that of his father, suggesting he was trained by his father. He exhibited at the Society of Artists, Free Society of Artists and the Royal Academy. Many of his works were published as engravings and mezzotints. Towards the end of his career he produced small still lifes of birds. His eldest son, John Francis Sartorius, continued the family tradition of painting sporting pictures.
