Charles John Mayle Whichelo was born in Brighton, the son of a brewer. He is thought to have been a pupil of John Varley and Joshua Cristall. He became a marine artist, landscape painter and teacher. During his early career he produced illustrations for ‘Select Views of London and its Environs’ (1804-05), ‘London Illustrata’ (1819) and ‘The Beauties of England and Wales’ (1801-15). In 1805, he visited Merton Place, home of Lord Nelson, and was given a sitting by Nelson for a chalk portrait. In 1812, he was described as ‘Marine and Landscape Painter to... the Prince Regent’. He produced mainly sea pieces until the later years of his life, when he turned to English and Swiss landscape and river views. He died in Kensington, aged about 81.
